Before you go

What visitors get wrong about Dutch coffeeshops.

The rules come from national law and from each municipality, and they are stricter than most visitors expect. A short, factual summary — the guides go into detail with sources.

Bring valid photo ID

Dutch law sets the minimum age at 18 and shops check identification at the door. Hazely itself is restricted to 21 and over. A passport, national ID card or EU driving licence is normally accepted; a photograph of one is not. More in what ID a coffeeshop accepts.

Residency rules vary by municipality

Some municipalities apply a residents-only criterion, so entry can be limited to people registered in the Netherlands. It is not applied everywhere and it changes over time. See whether tourists can visit coffeeshops and how the residents-only criterion works.

Opening hours are shorter than you think

Many shops close well before bars and restaurants do, and hours often differ on Sundays and public holidays. Hazely shows the current status, but confirm before travelling across town — why coffeeshop hours are set locally.

It is tolerated, not legal

Cannabis remains prohibited under the Opium Act; what exists is a formal policy of not prosecuting shops that stay inside defined limits. The difference matters the moment you step outside them — what gedoogbeleid actually means.

Public consumption is restricted

Several city centres, and areas around schools and stations, have designated no-use zones with fines attached. Signage is not always in English. See where you may and may not smoke.

Do not take any of it home

Carrying cannabis out of the Netherlands is a criminal offence with no coffeeshop exemption, and that includes a short train ride to Belgium or Germany — what happens when you leave the country.

Every shop has its own house rules

Cash-only counters are still common, photography inside is usually not allowed, and alcohol is not served in a coffeeshop. Rules on staying versus taking away differ from shop to shop.

Never drive

Driving under the influence is a criminal offence in the Netherlands and roadside saliva testing is routine. Plan to walk, cycle carefully, or take public transport.

Is Hazely free?

Yes. There is no purchase, no subscription and no paid tier. The app is supported by advertising.

Where does the shop information come from?

Locations come from public map data. Opening hours, ratings, review counts, phone numbers and websites come from public place information where it is available. Details can be out of date, so confirm with the shop before travelling.

What does the app do with my location?

Location is used only while the app is open, to show your position, find shops near you and draw walking routes. It is not used in the background and not sold. See the Privacy Policy.

What happens to a photo of a menu?

It is sent securely for text extraction and is not intended to be retained after processing. Image metadata is stripped before it leaves the device.

Which countries and languages?

The Netherlands only. The app is available in English and Dutch, and follows your device language.

Is there an iPhone version?

Hazely is on Android today. An iOS version is on the way.
